The total production of basic crops in the world, which are used in the manufacture of many food products. This increase in production came as a result of the increase in demand imposed by the permanent and growing growth of the global food and beverage industry.

The total production of basic crops, which are used in the manufacture of many food products, increased by 50% between 2000 and 2018 to 9.1 billion tons, an increase of 2.9 billion over the year 2000. According to the estimates of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO, cereals were the main group of crops produced in 2018, it accounted for about a third of the total, followed by sugar crops (24%) and vegetables (11%).

This increase in production came due to the increase in demand imposed by the permanent and growing growth of the global food and beverage industry, which pushes global food products suppliers to respond quickly to match supply markets with demand markets and meet the increasing demand for all food products.

In this article, we will review a group of the most important agricultural products and crops and the quantities of their new food products in various parts of the world:

Rice is the indispensable staple food product for more than half of the world's population, with total rice exports worldwide reaching 21.9 billion US dollars in 2019, and India ranks first with the highest value of exports (7.1 billion US dollars). (32.5%) of total rice exports, followed by countries as follows:

Thailand (4.2 billion dollars, or 19.2%).

⦁ Then the United States of America (1.9 billion dollars, 8.6%).

⦁ And in fourth place is Vietnam (1.4 billion dollars, 6.6%) of total exports.

Besides, the reason why rice is used around the world as the best whole product is its versatility as it can grow in almost any conditions, and thus nourish many generations of people in different climatic regions, besides to its inclusion as an ingredient in many new food products.

Banana is one of the most famous and exported food products in the world, with total banana exports worldwide reaching 14.7 billion dollars in 2019, an increase of 11.2% compared to 2018, and it was in the following order:

According to the food products supplier, Ecuador ranks first with the highest value of exports (3.3 billion US dollars), and the ratio is (22.6%) of total banana exports.

⦁ And followed by the Philippines (1.9) billion dollars, or 13.2%).

⦁ Then Colombia (1.6 billion dollars, or 11%).

⦁ And in fourth place in Costa Rica (999.7 million dollars, or 6.8%) of total exports.

Many food suppliers compete to supply it globally, with various varieties and many options in packaging.

Potato is a basic crop and can grow in any climate, and is characterized by its high food energy and carbohydrates, and in 2018 more than 17 million hectares of potatoes were harvested around the world, according to the estimates of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations:

⦁ More than 368 million metric tons of potatoes were produced worldwide.

⦁ China is the largest potato producer in the world, with China and India producing about one-third of the world's potato production.

China is also the main food producer in the sweet potato market, and global production in 2018 reached about 92 million tons, and China was responsible for 70% of global production.

Wheat ranks second after corn as a source of calories, and surpasses rice as a source of protein in low and middle-income countries, as in 2020 the total global wheat production reached 636.704 million metric tons:

⦁ China ranked first in terms of wheat production in the world, with a production volume of 134 thousand tons, or 21.9% of global wheat production

⦁ Russia, America, and Canada had 64.7% of the total global wheat production, and it is considered the second most important grain grown in America after corn.

Corn is one of the most important food crops in the world, and a great source of carbohydrates, iron, and protein, and corn farmers in the United States have witnessed continuous increases in annual revenues, as the United States was responsible for more than a third of global corn production, according to Statista in the year: 2020/2019

⦁ The United States was the largest producer of corn, with a production volume of about 345.89 million metric tons. Brazil and China are also producing countries.

⦁ The main buyers of American corn are Mexico and Japan.

Soybeans are an important source of oil and protein in the world, and in 2019/2018 the United States was the world's leading producer of soybeans, with a production volume of 120.52 million tons, but according to Statista estimates in 2020:

  • Brazil surpassed the United States in soybean production, with an output of about 126 million metric tons. 
  • Economically speaking, soybeans are considered one of the most important food products grains in the world after being processed, as it provides vegetable protein to millions of people in addition to being included as a component of many chemical new food products.

In the end, we notice that exporting food to international markets contributes to improving the competitive advantage of food products, as these countries will compete to adopt innovative and new technologies to meet the ever-changing demands and desires of customers, and the expansion in these markets helps them achieve global reach and a lot of profits.
